Why does the Bible even matter?

So what’s the big deal? You know right from wrong and you know to treat people the way you want to be treated, so you don’t need to read a book that’s 2,000 years old and longer than 1,000 pages to tell you how to be a good person, right? So why does the Bible even matter?

Well, that depends on what standard of truth you want to live by. We’re going to look into what the Bible does and why the Bible is important.

If you want to be a good person according to the standard of people, all you have to do is be better than the average person. But if you want to be a good person according to the standard of God, you’ll have to obey His Word.

God’s Word is His heart, His order for the Universe, and His instruction for His people. He worked through devout believers to write down into the language of man His own heart. These works of God were scrolls that made up books that were collected and printed into what we now have as the Holy Bible.

II Timothy 3:16
All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.

Here is what the Bible does. It is useful for doctrine which is holy order and instruction, useful for reproof which is admonishment, useful for correction which is setting right i.e. a return to doctrine, and useful for instruction in righteousness which is living uprightly. The Bible teaches you how to be a good person according to God.

Here is why the Bible is important. Our times are not stable. There is political conflict, civil unrest, religious persecution, and deconstructionism of values and moral beliefs (to name a few). Isaiah 33:6 says that God’s “wisdom and knowledge shall be the stability of thy times…” It was true in the 8th century BCE when it was written, it’s true today, and it will always be true. God’s Word is the stability of our times.

I John 2:5
But whoso keepeth his (God’s) word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.

In this time of uncertainty we can be certain that God’s heart does not change, that His love is unwavering, and that when you love God and obey His commandments, His presence in your life is unrestrained.
