The weird part of Christianity

Have you heard of the “weird part of Christianity”? Let me introduce you. Like the “weird part of YouTube,” many roads lead there and if you arrive there you won’t feel like you belong: it’s obscure, deep, and unsatisfying. It’s filled with doctrinal compromise, misplaced conviction, and lackluster ethics. It’s a ghost of true Christianity.

With so diverse a selection of biblical opinions from persuasive people, our accelerating desperation for experiencing a gratifying new thing, and our fear of public criticism, have we made room for the opportunistic to create a new God?

Our new god

A watered-down version of Christianity has been influencing Christian public opinion in recent years. Its influence has somewhat coincided with the rise of popular socialism, sexual liberalism, and social justice movements.

Our new god is a god that creates obstacles for you to prove your faithfulness; a god who praises the crusades of an outspoken LGBTQ+∞ABCDEFG activist preaching acceptance over the spiritual contribution of a minister who pulls a trodden down man up out of darkness; a god who commands that mind-altering drugs be legalized because “freedom”; a god who can’t wait for you to die so that you can hang out with him in heaven with Christ.

This is the god you see in culture, but let’s not be confused about who God truly is and what Christianity truly teaches us.

Our real God

In the Bible we read of the God who said, “I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.” [Hebrews 13:5]; the God who taught us that we’ve been chosen in Christ from before the foundation of the world [Ephesians 1:4]; the God who wrote, “How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace,” [Romans 10:15]; the God who warned us that it’s better the youth and aged alike be sober-minded [Titus 2:2-6]; the God who empathizes with our human condition by telling us that the death of a saint is costly [Psalms 116:15].

We don’t need a reenvisioned god; a cool god; a god that fits within the trending cultural aptitude and societal attitude; a god who decreases as science increases. We need God! We need the God who formed, made, and created Adam; who trusted Noah with saving the human race; who revealed Himself to Moses; who raised our Savior Jesus Christ from the dead; who revealed to Paul the finished scripture of salvation and redemption.

What we can do

Let’s go back to the basics of biblical doctrine. Remember the God who sent The Son and saved you? The God who made the impossible possible for you to be here today with power and peace and a smile on your face?

The God who has sustained mankind since the beginning is the same God with His arms wide open waiting for the world to acknowledge His true character, and become doers of His honorable word.
